Billy knew wild things were better off left in the wild, but when he found the injured red-tailed hawk, he couldn't leave it defenseless in the forest.  His only hope was that McGraw, a secretive mountain man, would help him save the hawk and perhaps train it to respond to a whistle. 
 
When their friendship is threatened by unthinking violence, Billy learns why McGraw has lived his life in seclusion and that sometimes even rational men don't always listern to reason.
