Johnny Neptune is the name given to a new-born orphan child found under a tree by two marines in the early days of New South Wales - Neptune because the child's mother was a convict transported to Australia on the sailing ship 'Neptune'. He is adopted by a foster-mother, herself formerly a convict. Johnny's subsequent career is set against the rapscallion, exciting background of early Sydney, with its steep, winding lanes and busy harbour.
