Johnny Neptune is the name given to a new-born orphan child found under a tree by two marines in the early days of New South Wales - Neptune because the child's mother was a convict transported to Australia on the sailing ship 'Neptune'. He is adopted by a foster-mother, herself formerly a convict. Johnny's subsequent career is set against the rapscallion, exciting background of early Sydney, with its steep, winding lanes and busy harbour. The background is authentic and carefully researched, but above all this is a lively and entertaining tale.
