When the Allies achieved victory over Germany and Japan in 1945 the world had been changed forever.  Australia, once isolated, was now part of a new world order where Communism was seen as a threat to peace.  The struggles for independence by the people of South-East Asia often became full-scale wars.
 
Since 1945, Australian forces have been on active service oversea - fighting insugency or serving on United Nations 'peace keeping' operations - from Korea and Malaya to Veitnam and Iraq, and in dozens of other trouble spots from Timor to the Solomons.
