The author tells the story of Louis Braille's early life, of his accident when he lost his sight, and of the frustrations and difficulties he had to overcome at school and home as a result. He worked with patience and determination at the Royal Institute for the Blind in Paris to invent a method which would make reading easier, and his system of six dots eventually met with success, and has since opened the door of knowledge and opportunity to blind people throughout the world.
